“I think of aquamarine crystals and true turquoise stones… because of its shade, and because it’s special, otherworldly, magical.”
“I know it’s called Sea Opal, but it makes me think of a desert, burnished sun-bleached and weather-beaten, as if a magic powder had been thrown on it, made of sea salt and sand crystals. Or a magical unicorn jumping out of the ocean.”
“A sky after a storm that gets really bright and washed out – that transition of the clouds changing from dark to light and the electric brightness breaking through – the tiny tinge of blue. The future is bright.”
Drive two hours north of Nashville, up through Kentucky to the Ohio River, and you’ll find yourself in Wonderland.
Wonderland is the workshop, science lab, art studio, and playground of denim wash master Dick Gaines. He’s part artist, part mad scientist. He’s been washing denim since he was a teenager, and he still loves it so much he
gets to work before the sun rises.
Jeans start out raw, like a blank canvas,
and it’s up to Dick to develop the precise shade and characteristics of each individual wash. Every pair is dry processed by hand, which means
Dick’s are almost permanently blue.
To strip away indigo and create a beautiful wear pattern, Dick’s invented some wild gadgets, like a glue gun that shoots beeswax or a sandpaper pinwheel. The wear patterns Dick replicates can make a brand-new, freshly sewn raw jean look like it’s been around for a hundred years.
Once they’ve been dry processed, the jeans go in the wash. Wonderland’s washing machines were salvaged from old-school Laundromats in California and customized to perform like industrial equipment. It’s just another instance of Dick Gaines’s magic touch – transforming old into new and new into old.
